Students

Every student should engage in a process of career exploration and self-assessment as they progress through college. Here are some steps you might take:

  1. Reflection and Self-Evaluation: The first step in career planning should be to gather information about yourself to assist in making a decision about a career.
  2. Exploration: The second step in career planning is to explore and research your options. Exploring takes your self-assessment a step further by looking at your personal interests, skills, values, and work-life needs and narrowing down areas of possibilities.
  3. Decision-Making and Goal Setting: After having completed your self-assessment and explored your options you should be ready to make some career decisions. The question now is how you will decide.
  4. Gaining Experience: Career related experience can help you develop the skills, abilities and knowledge to solidify your career goals.
  5. Implementation: This is the step in the process where you implement what you have learned and move forward towards a new job or more advanced education. You should also continue to evaluate your options and make adjustments as needed.

Handshake

is a digital platform tool that connects students and alumni to internships, jobs, and resources. Students and alumni can create a profile that includes prior professional experiences and information. NEIU students and alumni have the opportunity to explore careers from different organizations in which they are interested in. Through the platform, students can connect to peers with similar interests and inquire about professional experiences. Handshake offers unlimited access to job openings and professions.

How to create a profile
  • Log in to using your NEIU credentials
  • Upload your resume
  • Fill out your profile
  • Explore Handshake
  • Follow jobs and employers that interest you

Internships

The College of Business and Technology strongly encourages students to identify internship opportunities as a way to gain practical experience and also as an opportunity to try out their field of study.

Students can enroll in the internship course (COBM 382/482) and work with the faculty advisor to identify and acquire an internship. Use the Internship Class Application Form before starting this process.

Students can utilize the courtesy of the NEIU Alumni Association to identify an internship or micro-internship project opportunity.

Students can find their own paid or unpaid internships by talking to companies. Career Services and COBM Career Services can help the student identify and prepare.NEIU Student Profile
