CMTT339: Technical Theatre Production

All Communication, Media and Theatre (CMT) majors must fulfill at least 3 credit hours in Technical Theatre Practicum (formerly Advanced Theatre Practicum).

Students enrolled in Technical Theatre Production gain practical, hands-on experience in all technical areas of theatre for main stage productions, including, but not limited to, scenic carpentry, construction and painting techniques; properties design and construction; costume pulling and alterations; and lighting equipment and electrics.

Evening-Hours Only Option

All CMT majors must enroll in a section of Technical Theatre Production with their academic advisor, and then work with Assistant Professor Sarah J. Fabian to make arrangements for the evening-hours option. The evening-hours opportunity will give students a chance to learn about and gain hands-on experience in the following:

  • Stage management for one production
  • Assistant stage management for one production
  • Box office management and front of house management for both productions
  • Light board operation for both productions
  • Sound board operation for both productions

Each position above requires a different time commitment. Students who elect for the evening-hours option may not miss any meeting times unless it is a serious emergency. Students must fulfill the course's other requirements set forth by their instructor, which can include but is not limited to: course readings, quizzes, exams, attendance at a live theatre production, papers, and surveys. The time commitments vary, but it will meet the required hours for a 300-level course:

You report to the director of that production as well as the Managing Director of Stage Center Theatre. Time commitment very high for this role: primarily meeting in the evening from 6-10:30 p.m. on weekdays and some Saturdays. You must be in attendance for every regular rehearsal, technical and dress rehearsals, and for each performance of the production. Performances occur Thursday through Saturday evenings the first weekend of performances and then Wednesday through Saturday for the second weekend of performances. Show dates and times are available on the "Current Season" page.

  • Assistant Stage Management: You will assistant stage manage one of the two main stage productions for the semester in either the area of props or costumes. You report to the director of that production as well as the stage manager. • Box Office Management and Front of House Management: If you choose this option, you agree to handle the box office and front of house for both productions. You report to the Managing Director of Stage Center Theatre, Assistant Professor Sarah J. Fabian. Professor Fabian will train you on your duties. Performances occur Thursday through Saturday evenings the first weekend of performances and then Wednesday through Saturday for the second weekend of performances. Show dates and times are available on the "Current Season" page.

  • Light Board Operation: If you choose this option, you agree to be the light board operator for both productions. You report to the production's lighting designer and/or CMT Instructor G. "Max" Maxin IV for training. Performances occur Thursday through Saturday evenings the first weekend of performances and then Wednesday through Saturday for the second weekend of performances. Show dates and times are available on the "Current Season" page.

  • Sound Board Operation: If you choose this option, you agree to be the sound board operator for both productions. You report to the production's lighting designer and/or CMT Instructor G. "Max" Maxin IV for training. Performances occur Thursday through Saturday evenings the first weekend of performances and then Wednesday through Saturday for the second weekend of performances. Any student who is interested in electing into an evening-hours only option should meet with their academic advisor, and register for one of class sections. If there is an evening section of T.T.P. being offered that semester, then students must register for that section. There is a form you will need to fill out for evening-hour's assignments.
