Internships
Students interested in gaining a unique anthropological work or research experience outside the classroom should consider one of our internships. We offer several structured internships in which students assist Chicago area museum and zoo staff in their work and research projects. We also assist our students in finding field school opportunities in the US and abroad.
Academic Credit and Real-World Experience
Students earn academic credit as well as a rich learning experience that can inform future career decisions. Currently, the Anthropology Department offers the following internships for academic credit:
ANTH 3821-4 - Fieldwork in Anthropology, 1-4 cr.
Students earn academic credit for ethnographic, primatological, archaeological, paleontological, forensic, applied, or other relevant and typically off-campus anthropological fieldwork opportunities arranged for by the student. Student enrolls with anthropology faculty member who guides and oversees work. Fieldwork in Anthropology credits are designed to help students improve research skills, apply principles learned in the classroom, take advantage of fieldwork opportunities, and explore career options. Students must have completed two courses in the anthropological subdiscipline of the proposed fieldwork prior to enrolling in Fieldwork in Anthropology.
ANTH 3871-6 - Field Museum Internship, 1-6 cr.
Assist in behind-the-scenes curation activities in the Mammals Division, including animal preparation, evisceration, preservation, osteography, and data entry, or apprentice with the scientific illustrator in the Anthropology Division.
ANTH 3891-6 - Lincoln Park Zoo Research, 1-6 cr.
Contribute to long-term studies of ape and other species behavior by collecting ethological data.
