Placement Testing

Register for Placement Testing

The Testing Center administers placement tests and/or accepts measures of readiness to help determine a student's starting courses. Incoming college students must take a test or submit their measures after they submit an application but before registering for classes and attending orientation. Students who still need to satisfy college readiness may take one or more academic preparation courses before starting credit courses.

Can Placement Tests Be Waived?

Many students may have evidence of college readiness that can exempt them from part or all of the placement process. Please read our page to learn more.

Students may submit any or all of the following if they are less than 5 years old*:

  • High SAT/ACT scores or transitional Math course may waive Math tests.

  • A cumulative, weighted GPA of 3.25 or higher for recent graduates of U.S. high schools waives the English test.

  • Transfer credit from other institutions.

  • Recent ACCUPLACER Next Gen Reading, Writeplacer, Quantitative or Advanced Math placement test scores from other institutions.

The Testing Center also accepts to the placement test. Students who qualify to waive the Math placement tests can still take the tests to try to place into a higher class.

*Official transcripts/scores must be submitted to NEIU Admissions (admissions@neiu.edu).

If you aren't sure if you qualify to waive testing, contact Testing Services at testingservices@neiu.edu or email your academic advisor.
