Placement test results will be available at the conclusion of the test in the form of a report that indicates your scores and course placements. You can print out and/or take a photo of your score report and you'll also receive an email with a link to the report, which you'll be able to access at any time. You and your advisor will have access to this score via NEIUport within 1-3 business days.

Placement by Transitional Math

If you completed a state approved Quantitative transitional math course with a grade of C or better you may enroll in Math 112 or Math 113. If you are a STEM major, you may still need to take a Math placement test. Check with your advisor.

If you completed a state approved STEM transitional math course with a grade of C or better you may enroll in Math 112, 113, 149, 163, or 173.

Your advisor will help you determine your placement and choose the course that is right for you.

English (Reading and Writing) Placement

We want to place you in courses that will help you build on the reading and writing skills you already have so that you can succeed at NEIU and beyond. 
 
STEP ONE: All new international students must take the Accuplacer Reading and Writing placement tests. All first year students with a high school GPA below 3.25 who have not taken and passed a college level English course must take the Reading and Writing placement tests. All new transfer students who have not taken and passed a college level English course must take the Reading and Writing placement tests.

STEP TWO: After students take the Accuplacer Reading and WritePlacer tests, those who place into any ELP or READ course must take the . The survey (including essay question) will take at least 30 minutes to complete. Taking this survey may improve your reading and/or writing placement. Results will be available 5-7 days after you complete the survey.

What does my writing placement mean?

ENGL 101: You will be in a  first-year composition class, without additional formal support.  Over the course of the term, you will write several essays, learn about peer-reviewing, and start to incorporate reading into your writing. ENGL 101 is required for many courses in different majors. ENGL 101 counts for college credit. 
ELP 098/ENGL 101: You will be in an English 101 class but will have an additional section that gives more individual instruction for parts of the course that you find difficult. Some students just need a little more time and a little more practice with different kinds of writing and the combined ENGL 101 and ELP 098 really helps students develop those skills. Note ELP 098 does not count for college credit. 
ELP 096: You will be in a pre-composition class. You will work on your sentence structure, paragraph organization, and adding details into sentences, paragraphs, and essays. ELP 096 does not count for college credit.

What does my reading placement mean?

READ 097: You will be in a reading skills course. You will learn strategic reading and study methods that will help you succeed in your classes. You will also practice organizing textbook information such as annotation and outlining.  
READ 096: You will be in a reading and study skills course. You will work on identifying main ideas and supporting information in paragraphs, short essays, and articles. You will also practice drawing conclusions from what you have read. 
 

Students can place into a math course based on their ACT or SAT math score.

Students can also be exempt from taking the reading portion of the test with an ACT English score of 20 or higher or an Evidence Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) SAT score of 480 or higher.

Note that there is no ACT/SAT equivalence for the writing portion of the test.

Please locate your ACT or SAT math score to find your beginning math course(s).
Also note that by taking the math portion of the test, your advisor will take the better of the two results.  So it is recommended to take the math portion of the test unless your ACT/SAT score places you into Calculus I (the highest possible placement).
